Leash Laws For Dogs

Onslow County Animal Services reminds dog owners in Onslow County that it is against the law Chapter 4 Sec 4-7 for any dog to run at large. Also Sec 4-22 all dogs are required to have collars and rabies tags.
Violators will be issued a fine and citation for penalties up to $500.00. (for each infraction)

RUNNING AT LARGE

Onslow County Animal Services Animal Control Ordinance

Chapter 4 Sec. 4-7. – Running at large states:

Dogs
(a) For the purpose of this section running at large shall mean: Any animal while roaming, running or self hunting off the premises or property of its owner or keeper and not under the immediate control of its owner or keeper.
(b) While being walked or exercised off the premises or property of the owner or keeper, the animal must be restrained by a leash connected to a collar or harness, sufficient to restrain the animal from breaking loose.
It shall be unlawful for the owner, custodian or harborer of any dog to allow or permit such dog to leave the premises of the owner or other person having custody of the dog unless such dog is securely under leash; said leash being not more than six-feet long, and under the control of a competent person. Dogs must be confined to the premises of the owner or other person having custody of the dog and shall be restrained by means of a fence or wall or other enclosure, or restrained individually by a leash or chain.
